"It seems more than coincidence that country singer/songwriter Larry Hosford shares a hometown with John Steinbeck. With his earthy songs of working-class struggle, the Salinas-born Hosford would have been at home in a Steinbeck novel. Beginning his musical career playing folk music on Cannery Row, Larry played in various area bands through the 1960s and 70s, most notably the fondly remembered Santa Cruz band, Snail. Those experiences plus a rueful stint as a recording artist in LA and Nashville and years steeped in the drug subculture have provided Lorenzo with ample material for his memoirs, being written in the town that shares a name with Larry's most famous country song ... 'Salinas'. Where else?"

John’s music is as indelible as it is indefinable. Asked for influences, he creates a guest list to one amazing dinner party: Bruce Springsteen, Guns ‘N Roses, Michael Jackson, Wilco, Radiohead, and fellow Minnesota native Bob Dylan all passing the hot dish. John’s songs have been heard in movies, on network and cable television, on iPods, in cars, on radios, and around campfires. He has performed on several continents and in 49 of the 50 United States. He has been releasing albums on Garland Lane, his own label, since 2004 to an always growing number of listeners. He remains an unsigned and unaffiliated artist and he is proud of that fact. He continues to make a living and build a dedicated following the old fashioned way: one new believer at a time.
SYLVIA HEROLD with Chuck Ervin on double bass
Sylvia Herold is delighted to be making her debut at The Garden Song Summer Concert Series. She brings a wild enthusiasm for jazz and swing songs of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Songs of wit and romance by composers Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, and Harold Arlen are lovingly rendered in a voice the San Francisco Examiner calls “mesmerizing.” Herold was a member of the swing vocal trio Cats & Jammers and played extensively with The Hot Club of San Francisco. Currently, she tours and records with Wake the Dead, Sylvia Herold and the Rhythm Bugs, and The Sylvia Herold Ensemble. She has appeared on more than 25 albums, including five solo recordings. Herold is a resident teacher at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, Calif. She teaches guitar and voice at Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, California Coast Music Camp, Port Townsend Voice Works, and British Columbia Swing Camp. Singing, playing guitar, and learning new songs are her favorite activities. Herold will be joined by Chuck Ervin on upright bass.
“Sylvia Herold is one of those gifted musicians who has it all. Exceptional guitar playing, amazingly beautiful vocal chops, and the musical knowledge to back it all up. I love her music and musicianship.” —Jim Nunally
